The month-back Deloitte–Australia AI report case raises a blaring perspective: Now more than ever, senior leaders play a critical role not just in overseeing deliverables, but in upholding the integrity and trust that define the consulting profession.**

Here's what happened: Deloitte was paid ~A$440,000 to produce a report for the Australian Government on its Targeted Compliance Framework (a welfare compliance system). After publication, experts found:

- Fake academic citations

- Misquoted or fabricated court decisions

- Incorrect references and footnotes

Outcome: Deloitte Australia admitted to the accusation and agreed on a partial refund. A bigger outcome: Breach of trust with other associated fallouts.

This incident raises questions about AI use in high-stakes consulting and is likely to influence future policy on AI use, auditing, and contract governance. And so, it is going to be leaders' judgment, experience, and ethical leadership that will ensure technology is used responsibly and transparently.
